Hi Bgee,
You have beautiful hair.
For the oily scalp, I had the same issue when I started to have long hair. I washed everyday and after some years I started to wash less often and now I wash once per week.
The process took some months because the more you wash, the more your scalp produce oil and the more you wash and so on…. You must accept to have greasy hair when you start to wash less often but it should be less greasy over time.
Hi Bgee,
Thanks for stopping in and posting to the refreshed mlhh. Have to say your hair look fabulous and cool you have a trusted stylist to help maintain your hair.Always a crap shoot when you go to a salon and they don't listen to what your looking for an cut too much off.Sounds like you've been an on and off long hair over the years but that has been the case with lots of guys who've came through here.Anyway looks like your on the right track so please keep us posted on your progress.Cheers,
Mark aka Hairball
Hi LHIA,
To be honest you need to do your homework when it comes to these products, especially for the long term, being there may be negative side affects.I'm guessing Minoxadil is over the counter so not a perscription.I believe I've mentioned taking Finasteride as a percription for enlarged prostate.I've been taking it daily since around 2017 and as far as I know had no negative effects.Supposedly its good for the hair but that wasn't why I'm taking it but if it does its a positive.Possibly you can see a specialist about the hair lose and hear what they have to say. Other than that its just grasping at straws with over the counter treatments that may take years of use to determine if they are helping or not.Hope this helps my friend.
Mark aka Hairball
Even though I got the Minoxadil I think i'm leaning towards not using it.
The idea of having to use it forever scares me, I have to question the effects of using it. Will there be effects from using it 20 or 30 years down the road?
Your hair looks phenomenal!!
And as far as your stylist, I love that!! That's awesome! I started seeing a stylist, as opposed to my barber, who was great, but really only gave really short cuts. She's been great and super supportive. She's almost as excited as I am to start my journey!!
Cheers to your great hair!!
Hi BG,
I will be interested in seeing how long you can grow it. My dream has always been waist length hair, but my terminal length is a few inches short of that, and maybe you’ll achieve that goal in the next year or two. Honestly, I can’t complain, at 72, since I still have a good hairline in front, and only slight thinning in the crown, which hasn’t changed significantly in the last 15-20 years. I do have a few photos in a post that I made some time back, which is a ways down the board, if you want to see what my hair looks like now, and my avatar photo shows it as well. Also, I made a couple of quick videos to show the hair in motion, just below this thread, and those give a rough idea as well. The hair stays with me until I die.
I admit to being rather afraid of stylists, since the sad truth is that they’re prone to take off too much, unless you can find a gem like the one that you have. I do dusting trims myself, as needed to keep my ends in shape, and in my opinion, my hair still looks decent and well cared for.
Good luck in your future hair journey , and I’m glad that you posted here!
David
Hi, David. I don't have a goal. When I originally started growing my hair in 2013 I just wanted it to be long enough to tie back in a ponytail. Once I got to that length, I went for mid-back and kept it there for about 10 years. Two years ago, I cut it back to shoulder length because the ends were very dry (I deep condition the ends now). I kept it shoulder length for a year but decided to grow it back last spring. Now I'm almost at the mid-back length again. I'm thinking I might just see how long I can get it this time.
My stylist is great, that's true. If you or anyone else on here wants to find someone to take care of split ends or give your hair a little shape, I'd suggest going to a high-end salon and finding a stylist who specializes in long hair. You'll pay more, but you only have to go twice a year or so and it's worth it. Shaping can make a world of difference. For example, my stylist cuts some shorter pieces in the front that frame my face and make my hair look fuller.
Hi BG,
Welcome to the MLHH, glad you’ve found us, and it’s so cool to see another older guy growing his hair out. You have a fantastic mane for 55, and a great hairline, to boot. Thank you for sharing your hair care routine with us, and your stylist sounds like an awesome person as well. I don’t visit stylists myself, but if I had one as good as yours, I would consider it, just to ensure that I’m getting the best hair care possible.
I was wondering whether you had a particular hair goal in mind? I’m sure that you could grow it a lot longer if you wanted to.
I’m also an older guy with long hair, 72, going on 73 in a few months, and am fortunate to have a decent hairline as well. I’m looking forward to your future posts, and please keep us updated.
David

Hi, you guys. I've been visiting this message board on and off for about 12 years. That's when I finally decided to grow my hair long. I'd always wanted to do it, but every time my hair got close to shoulder length, I'd get self-conscious and cut it short again. You guys helped me get over that. I posted a couple of times back in the day, but never became a regular.
Just thought I'd jump in and say hello. I just turned 55. My hair is currently almost mid-back in length.
As for hair care, I get regular trims every 3-6 months, depending on what I've been doing. Regular trims keep it looking healthy. My stylist is awesome. A couple of months ago, I told her I wanted to cut it short and she was like, “There's no short hair in this chair!” Love her.
Contrary to most advice, I shampoo and condition almost every day. My hair is fine and my scalp is oily. If I don't wash it, my hair it looks terrible. I use a moisturizing formula because its more gentle on my scalp.
I also use the hairmax laser comb to maintain my hairline. I started using it about twenty years ago. Does it work? Well, I'm 55 and still have a decent hairline, so maybe.
Anyway! That's it for now. Hope you guys are doing well.
BG
Hi Mark,
That’s awesome that you’re getting positive comments, so by all means, keep doing what you’re doing!
I’m not a fan of heat, and mid 90s never even occurs around here. The weather here has just been pleasantly warm, although tomorrow might get a bit more uncomfortable. Thursday and into next week looks to be very nice, though, and mostly in the low 60s.
David
Hi David,
Yes I really do like the look of my hair with henna and admit I receive quite a few positive comments on the color so I'm guess its compelling enough that people will even approach me and give me the encouragement. With that said I'll keep doing it as I enjoy the process of applying it and it doesn't take all that long to do in addition to I don't need a salon.
As far as the weather today is the mid point of our current heat wave that's predicted to reach the mid 90s *f. Only good point is the humidity is still very low so not oppressive like when we finally get into summer. Still I love the warmer weather months over winter hands down.Enjoy the milder days David :) Cheers
Mârk aka Hairball
Hi Mark,
I appreciate your feelings for the henna, and if it works for you and you like it, I’d stay with it. I’ve just let my hair gradually change over the years, and I like the silvery white anyway.
After a rather raw, cold and miserable April and first week of May, our weather has taken a huge turn for the better in the last week or so. It could even reach the mid 80s F, or 30 C, here on Wednesday, quite remarkable for Nova Scotia at this time of year. I will probably need to turn on the AC for the first time in the next day or two.
David
Hi David,
I occasionally think about what my natural color would be without the henna being as I noted its been colored since around 2011.Trouble is if I wanted to go that route it would take awhile to see the full effect since henna doesn't fade but grows out over time. The one aspect of the henna I appreciate is that it makes me look much younger than I am since I also do the facial hair too. Don't get me wrong as I embrace my age but if I can easily have a younger look with hair coloring why not.Not sure that was my thought back in the beginning but now its paying dividends.Still the main objective is to just still have long hair ;) Anyway supposed to get really hot here in NJ the next three days so have to try and stay cool and be grateful I don't have to work on rooftops anymore on broken AC equipment.Cheers.
Mârk aka Hairball
Hi Mark,
Thank you for your kind words, and yes, I feel fortunate to have the hair that I have at 72, and less than 3 months from 73.
I have always rather enjoyed the silvers as they slowly took over my formerly medium to dark brown mane. The hair in indoor photos or videos always looks a bit lighter than it actually is, and the outdoor video shows the true colour.
If you decide to stop the henna, it would be so cool to see your true hair colour. You might start getting a few nice silvers of your own!
David
Good Morning David,
Just saw your post this morning with the video links, which worked perfectly for me, so good thing I missed the problem you described before Jesus came to the rescue. You are so fortunate to have such a great head of hair at your age as I just turned 64 last Tuesday so I'm a bit behind you in age but thankfully my mane is still solid.Maybe not as long as yours but no visible thinning. However I always wonder what my natural color is at this juncture but the henna covers that up.Someday I'd like to know but not sure I'd want to give up on henna as I've been doing that since around 2011.Regardless we are both fortunate with our hair at this juncture in our lives.Keep up the great work and do more videos my friend.Cheers.
Mârk aka Hairball
Hi Jesus,
Thank you for fixing this for me! You just need someone like you with excellent computer skills to know what went wrong.
David
(PS. I also edited out my comment in the original video about it not working, to avoid confusion, since you fixed the issue)
It seems that this didn’t work totally, and one still needs to click on the links to see the videos. There were a couple of other members who posted videos here recently, and in those, you can see a “preview”, and the “play” button, but it’s not visible in mine. I wish I knew what I need to do to enable these to display properly. Another possibility is that because I am linking to a “short” rather than a true video, some options are different.
Bug fixed!
The regex for URL of YouTube shorts wasn't in the list so, the video wasn't replaced. I've added it, you have to just paste the URL of the video inside your message.
Hello everyone,
I hope everyone is enjoying the nice spring weather. Today, I’m doing something a little different by posting a couple of videos from my YouTube channel. I hope that this works.
I’ve always felt that seeing long hair in motion can show it much better than any still photo could. The first video, that I took a few months ago, shows my hair indoors, in motion. As usual with indoor photos, the hair looks lighter than it actually is.
The second video was taken while I was walking outside a couple of days ago, while walking, with my hair blowing in the wind. With the outdoor lighting, the natural silvers show better.
I guess that my hair doesn’t look too bad considering that I’ll be 73 in less than 3 months. I have a couple of other videos on my YouTube channel as well.
David
I respect that, Cicero. By the way, I do care about growing out my hair.
Hi Philip,
Well said! Thumbs up!
David
Huh? All I have ever seen here are posts from people who care about growing their hair. There are not a lot of us who frequent this board these days, but the ones who are here are wonderful. And…the thing about advice is, one should feel free to give it, and then let it go - no one has to follow anyone's advice. Anyway, good luck to you. Take care of your hair, you have years put into it and it is marvelous, regardless of your abrupt and mystifying departure.
Philip
Hi Jesus, your reply was very well stated as I don't really have much more to add between what you and David already stated.I've been a member here since 2005 and have found this a great place to hang out and shoot the breeze about hair or about our personal interests.I've even met several members here in real life just because of the mlhh community. You've done an outstanding job breathing new life into the hyperboard taking it into the future which it sorely needed.Hopefully Cicero eventually realizes this and comes back. Anyway thanks for all your support improving the user experience here as it certainly shows.Cheers.
Mârk aka Hairball
Hi Jesus,
You couldn’t have said it better, and I don’t even have accounts at places like Facebook or Instagram. You hit the nail on the head that this community feels more like a “home away from home”, far more than those sites could ever aspire to be. Although I enjoy Reddit, and FierceFlow, it still doesn’t have the “homey” feel that we have here.
Also, I, and I’m sure that many others, appreciate all of the hard work that you have put into our site to make it even better, and you are spot on about the fact that we’re getting a lot more activity now.
Like you, I am deeply saddened that Cicero is leaving, and his reasons seem especially puzzling, and I have no idea why he would even think that we’re not dedicated to long hair. Hopefully, at the least, he is reading our comments and contemplating a return at some point in the future.
David
Hi Cicero,
Your post made me sad. I don't understand why you said that we don't care about growing our hair on a website dedicated to long haired guys.
I discovered the MLHH few years ago and as a longhair, I found a place to meet others guys like me and I don't feel alone anymore with my long hair. I've also searched if other websites like this one exists but they don't. Of course there is many Facebook groups but it's not the same thing, you are annoyed by ads, algorithms and many spy trackers. I don't like all these big tech companies that impose theirs rules on the Internet.
On the MLHH it's freedom, it's an independent website without ads or trackers, it's just a community that gather long hair guys around the world for almost 30 years! During all these years, It has become an incredible source of informations and advices about long hair for guys. There's no other resource like this one on the Internet.
What makes me also sad is that I've spent time to contribute to the website by making a new interface which meets today web standards and which is user friendly. But the good surprise is that since the update, there's new messages every day, I didn't expect that because before the update the website was almost dead with a post every two months.
I always see long hair guys as friendly people. I hope see you again here with your hyperlong hair.
Hey Cicero,
Well I have to admit your post was unexpected this morning since we've had a great relaunch of the mlhh in its new format. Not sure why you came to your conclusion as this hyperboard has been nothing but supportive in all the years I've been here.I feel we have a more personal touch here compared the longhair groups on Facebook and such.Years ago it was suggested to move this site to Facebook but I never liked that idea.Anyway not to get off topic so I hope you reconsider but everyone has their own idea what they want out of a social media site. Good luck in your future endeavors as I hope we at least made some sort of impact for you.Cheers.
Mârk aka Hairball
Hi Philip,
That is so cool to hear, and it actually sounds as though long hair is even more prevalent in your area than it is here. Although seeing more long hair now than I used to, the long hair remains in the minority, unfortunately. The trend is in the right direction, and hopefully, our area will “catch up” to your area sooner rather than later.
David
Hi Cicero,
I admit that I was surprised to read your post this morning, especially your comment about us not caring about growing long hair. Of course we care about growing long hair, and I’m not aware of anyone who posts here who doesn’t care about growing their long hair. One thing that you have to remember is that most of us are not as blessed as you in your ability to grow extremely long hair, and that’s due to genetics. Terminal length varies for all of us.
Naturally, I would love to be able to grow mine longer, and I do my utmost to care for it so that it grows as long as possible. Despite having good hair for my age of 72, I’m still stuck with a terminal length a few inches above my waist.
I sincerely hope that there wasn’t anything that I or anyone else said that offended you. In particular, I know that I commented on your message about Philip’s bangs, but I was simply expressing my own opinion, and also qualified my comment as well, so I hope that wasn’t the issue. Hopefully, we can persuade you to stay and provide inspiration.
David
I'm ditching this board, again.
People here do not seem to care about growing their hair. Or seeking advice about doing so.
Hi Philip,
That sounds like a perfect plan, and you will get here, I promise!
David
Hey David,
I just thought I'd chime in too - I work on a college campus and so many of the male students I see have long hair or are growing it out. I have never seen as high of a percentage of long haired men as I do these days. I sometimes wonder if that's an effect of living in Colorado, but I think it's a wider trend among young men in the U.S. and I am totally in favor of it! :D
Philip
Hi David,
You are exactly right - the bangs will continue to grow with the rest of my hair. At some point, inevitably, I will pull it into a ponytail (probably often) but that's not my main ambition - right now I just want to see it long, loose, and flowing past my shoulders ;)
Thanks for the encouragement on the journey!
Philip
Hi Cicero,
Just my personal opinion, but I’m not a fan of bangs, and prefer the longer front hair to allow the use of a ponytail, with all hair tied back, and away from my face. That’s the way I wear it most of the time, and the only time that I wear it down is when I’m at home.
I know that some guys prefer the bangs, though, and everyone is entitled to wear their long hair exactly as they wish. My thoughts are that Philip is not planning to keep the bangs, and the only reason that he has them now is just a part of his grow out process. I will let Philip speak for himself, though.
David
Hi Cicero,
Wow how time has flown by.To me 2011 doesn't seem that long ago but yes its 15 years! Great accomplishment in your field of work and a noble career. Your hair looks fabulous as well in your pics. Time marches on but we are only as old as the number says. Thanks for the cool post my friend.Cheers.
Mârk aka Hairball
Hi Cicero,
Thank you for sharing so much of your background with your fellow MLHH members, and that we can all succeed in our endeavours, whether one has long or short hair. Congratulations on your success. Personally, I was a scientist while still working, a chemist in a lab, and I retired in 2008.
From what I can see here, your hair seems to be fairly wavy. I think that I noticed some waves in your other photos as well.
David

Only I, am I.

My name is Joe Marks. I once posted on here as Bruin. I am now posting as Cicero.

Put your mind to a thing. Achieve that thing.

Cicero
I pulled my bangs down once and cut my hair along my eyebrow line… big mistake on my part. The hair popped up and made me look pretty silly. It's all part of the hair journey. We make mistakes. You probably didn't have to cut that gum out of your hair. Living and learning is life. People say peanut butter works to loosen the gum. Maybe butter would work better. I honestly don't know personally. Just know that it's not really a big deal at your length.
Cicero
It might sound silly, but I consider myself to be a long-hair pioneer. Don't care what people think more than what I think as it pertains to me being me and true to me. If that makes sense.
I'm an introvert. You won't see me in public with my hair down often. Too many people still criticized me back in that day. It didn't stop me. I just stayed away.
Long hair on men is more accepted these days, which I'm pleased to see. My own family discouraged me back then… about twenty years ago. Above all, be you. Don't care what other people think more than what you think about yourself. I have many stories of conquering adversity.
You can't braid hair that long behind your back. You braid it as far as you can, and then pull your hair off to the left or right depending on what works best for you… left or right handed, and finish the job from there. Practice makes better, but not perfect.
Best wishes on your hair journey,
Cicero
Mop top is awesome. If you want bangs, cut them. It takes many months for your hair to grow out so your hair does what you want you hair to do for you. Be true to you and your hair goal.
Cicero
Peanut butter will get gum out of your hair.
Hi Kris,
Congratulations on three years, and your hair looks very good here. I recall that you posted a back photo recently as well, but that’s well down the page now, so it may be worth posting that again, since someone else did ask for a back photo.
I assume you have a length goal in mind.
David
Hi Philip,
You’re actually doing very well, and the bangs are clearly past your eyes now. It also seems that you have a perfect hairline as well, so no problems in that regard.
In no time at all, your hair will be past your chin, and a ponytail will be an option. Please be patient, though, since the journey can seen frustratingly slow sometimes.
David
It's a good start. Wait one year and you'll have a ponytail.

Hi everyone,
It’s been about 3 weeks since my last post and thought I’d post a May update. Still a work in progress but getting a little longer every day 😄
Hope everyone is doing well! Keep growing!
Phiiip
Like most guys my terminal length seems to have shortened a bit from my younger years but still I'm thankful for the fact I haven't lost hair on the top of my head aka MPB. I'll take that any day and any length, even if shoulder blade, is icing on the cake.Cheers.
Mârk aka Hairball
Hi Kris,
great hair, what is your hair length goal? Do you ever wear it in a ponytail or bun?
Cheers,
Tes
Hi Jesus,
Welcome to the party! I’m at terminal length as well, a few inches above my waist, although there seem to be times when it seems to try to gain a small amount of additional length, but it may be wishful thinking on my part.
It’s only people with absolutely perfect hair genes, those whose individual hair strands last 10 years or more, who can grow to such epic lengths as Cicero, and mere mortals such as you and I have to be content with waist length or a bit shorter.
David
It's Men's Hyperlong Hair!
I would like to have such long hair. I haven't trim for years, it seems stopped almost at my waist.
