First off welcome back as its never too late to make a re appearance.I have to say the current state of your hair looks fantastic so even though not as long as you once had it I see nothing wrong.It looks like your wife redeemed herself with this trim compared to what you described as a bad haircut in a fit of rage years ago.I agree about barbers/stylists being if you don't know them well its a crap shoot on how your hair will turn out.
Personally I haven't had a professional trim since 2005 and frankly never cut my own hair.I just take care of it and leave it be.What's odd though is I've actually lost length over the years as you would think it would be the opposite.I really don't have a bad split end problem so all I can attribute it to is getting older.However the hair on my head is full and not receding at all, just the length isn't what it used to be.I still color by hair with henna which I think makes it look striking.
