The symbolism is universal. Long hair on a man means nobility and freedom and short hair means being under a collective system or the control of its leaders. The old tonsure is a relic from the days of slavery.
Eastern Orthodox priests traditionally have long hair and beards, because the symbolism isn't the same as in western churches. In fact, it is similar to that of Orthodox Jewish rabbis, the Vow of Samson and all that.
Some Evangelicals and fundamentalists make a lot of a few phrases in St Paul - and want all men to look alike in 1950's style with "short back and sides" and the same suits. How boring!
I am a Christian and a priest - and I have long hair.
