Thanks for sharing that interesting "problem". It would be great if you could post a couple of photos (hair up and hair down).
Some of us have hair that is unruly when not tied back which can give a negative perception. I tend to keep mine in a ponytail when working or dressed-up, although I do not get negativity when it is down.
As others have said, do what you are comfortable with.
