Out of curiosity, how did you guys end up deciding your goal as far as hair length went? Now that I'm about an inch away from where I've always wanted it, I'm not satisfied. I'll probably just keep it growing. Is that what a lot of you did?
Steve
My min length goal is anywhere passed my armpits.
I chose that as my goal simply because that is when my shoulders & head stop getting in the way of me seeing my hairs true length.
But if my employment situation stays the way it is, I'm probibly going to grow my hair all the way out to terminal length, no trims. I chose that as my alt goal because it will let me know what my hair is caipable of, its the easiest length to maintain - as in I wont have to pay for trims or trimming suplies - and on the off chance that I ever decide to shorten it once it gets there, I'll know what other lengths it looks & behaves best at.
Sorry if this doesn't quite make sense, its as clear as I can make it.

Well, I came to the conclusion to grow it out down to my shoulderblades because of a few inspirations from some musicians. If all goes well though I may just grow it to waist-length. I hope my terminal is longer than that though, considering my hair is VERY thick and full of volume.
I never really had a goal length, just let it grow...and as long as it is not a problem, I'll keep growing...so far...not a problem!
Did I think I would ever be at knee length? No. But I also never ruled it out.
The goal posts keep changing. I originally wanted it only longish - just below my ears. Then it got to shoulder-length. I found that length gave it more weight so it looked better.
Now it's down to my shoulder-blades and I like it even more. I'll probably keep it about this length - maybe trim it now and then so it gets more volume.
But who knows? Now it's this long I'm sorta curious. I wonder what it's terminal length would be ... hmmmm
I MIGHT try to find out but even if I do, I think I would trim it back to the length it is now eventually anyway. I'm not keen on the look of VERY long hair.

I started off with a goal of shoulder-blade length, as that was the length I'd grown it to last time, but when it got there, I decided to go for waist length. It's currently an inch or two below my butt and not showing signs of stopping yet.
In terms of setting goals, I suppose it's about what we think will look good and be manageable, and as we reach our initial goal lengths and realise it's not a great hassle to care for, we let it grow. I certainly don't think I ever imagined that I'd be able to sit on my hair when I first started growing it, but nothing ever really seems to work out quite the way you planned it.
The only problems I've had with my hair are: getting it caught in doors, getting it caught when tying my shoelaces, tangles when I leave it loose on a windy day and my friend's three-year-old deciding it would be fun to swing off my braid. Yes, it takes time to care for it and maintain it, but I think that's part of the enjoyment of having long hair. It's also quite therapeutic to sit there brushing your hair - or having someone else brush it for you.
Steve,
The answer is yes. To quote a famous line from the Hair-The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical . "As long as GOD can grow it."

Purely a subjective decision. There is no rationale to debate.
We're not *debating* anything. We're discussing it. And some of us find it interesting.

Indeed no rationale to debate, but luckily we're not debating at all :)
Once I get there, my goal will most likely shift to mid-back, given my past goal shifts :-)
So to sum it all up: "Just a little bit longer"
Goals change as you grow - partly because you get used to what seemed very long, so in order for your hair to feel long, you need more of it.
Also, you may be restricted by what is actually possible. My hair will never grow to the length I originally wanted, so I never cut it or trim it. Makes those decisions easy.
Enjoy the journey.
Pretty much. My original goal was a little ways past shoulder length, long enough to be able to properly 'tail' it. But once it got there I decided to let it get a little longer, and a little longer...

I'm going for terminal length. Why not? It's easy to pony tail it if it gets in the way, no matter how long you let it go.
Right now my goal is to get my hair back to waist length.
There was a point in the 80s where it was knee length, but that was too long to manage. I cut it back to about nipple length, but that was too short. I've attempted to get it back to waist length but damage to the ends keeps me from that goal. For me i'll grow it back to waist length and then keep it there.
Hi Steve,
You kinda nailed it as that is how I ultimately decided on my goal length.Even though my length has stabilized it is still growing so I'm assuming the breakage and shedding are keeping my length at its max.But yes, keep it growing:)Cheers

For me., it is mid back length (halfway between the shopulder bl;ades and the waist) Which it has not yet achieved, but is approaching. This was the length my hair was kept form the late 60s through most of the 70s. However, I will rweconfigure my goal once that has been attained....Maybe. I'll let yas know when i get there. (I like the way my tail flairs across my upper back and between the shoulder blades right now) nearly two years, coming up folks, Pics to come, I promise.
Yes! Another deciding factor for me was when I impulsively cut my hair short back in Y2K.... In my decision to re-grow my hair back (which was almost instantaneous, once I realized how much I regretted making that mistake), I told myself that I wanted to see it grow as long as possible this time, to not stop it from growing until "it stops by itself!"

I stopped getting my hair cut in 1992. My hair ties into a ponytail over 40 inches long. Hair has a way of growing on you, the longer it gets, the longer you want it.

Hi Steve,
Of course no length is long enough, and I only wish I could achieve a few more inches with mine, but it has really slowed down. Good luck with your future growing!
Keep it growing,
David
My original goal was mid back, but I wanted to go a little further and grow it to my lower back which I will be there soon finally. :)
I'm definitely growing my hair long because I am curious to see where my terminal length will be. However, I'm also curious to see if I will reach my family record, my great grandma holds the record in our family for having floor length hair.
The longest my hair has ever been was waist length or maybe slightly shorter than waist length. I find mid back to lower back to be my prefer lengths. I don't have a desire to have my hair past my waist. I would be afraid of it getting caught on objects etc.
