I've never been a fan of pushing it behind the ears. To me it looks like you're hiding it behind the ears. Even with a ponytail I like to leave some hair over the ears. I think I like hair over the ears because as a kid my dad always kept his hair cut short and he had these huge elephant ears sticking out. Even in pictures of my dad as a kid he had big ears.
