In my opinion, the best way to get through the so-called "awkward stage" is by remembering what I call the 4 C's: be Confident, and keep your hair Clean, Conditioned, and Combed (or brushed), and let it do its own thing. I think the biggest mistake men can make when growing out their hair (other than the dreaded "maintenance trim") is to overuse styling products in an attempt to keep every single strand neatly in place. Why suffer through the journey to achieving long hair, all the while attempting to simulate the "neatness" of short hair by gluing it down, rather than experiencing the joy of all the various lengths as they occur? By letting one's hair reveal its true character and "personality" throughout the entire journey, one might find oneself revealing and enjoying more of one's own as well, to a degree that wasn't possible when one was regularly cutting it off in order to fit into the dominant societal mold. If you look confident (and you do!), your hair will look cool.
