Yes. Judging by the complection that I had detected in the B+W, it appeared to me as if in real life he was of light complection which would tend to have gone along with the freckles. The original is above so as to compare. To have turned the hair this way might have taken who knows how long.
I was surprised at how many other colorized attempts there have been made of Custer and you may want to check these out. My way of doing it is of my own invention which took at least 4 years of on and off experiments to develope, and so I do not follow what many others say to do or how "easy" it is to do. (It isn't.) My attempts aim at trying to be as realistic as possible. This being so, I toss aside glamour colors to dazzel the eye. Maybe someday I will get it right, but I highly doubt it. LOL :-)
