This is similar to the wisdom that vertical stripes on clothing make you look thinner and horizontal stripes have the opposite effect.
Straight hair not only is thinner because it all lies tighter to the head and that makes the breadth of your head to be less, but the above bit about verticalness of the grain also comes into play to make your head seem thinner.
