The road trip really was a cross section of the glory and grandeur of eastern California...not perhaps the most perfect examples of all the places, but fine examples withal.
Quite uncrowded, but even at high season it isn't too crowded...the masses mostly stop within the park and the East Side is rarely busy...so many interesting places, many of them out on dirt roads.
Unspoiled...welll...it is Mono Lake...still 33 feet lower than before LA started diverting the streams coming in.
And yes, Mono Lake is about 4 hours drive inland from SF.
